The End of Air Conditioner Freon

In 1992 the EPA concluded that the use of HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) or air conditioner freon chemicals was harming the environment. These chemicals were largely used to keep AC units and refrigerators cooling properly. Commonly called Freon, the EPA decided that all production and importation were to be discontinued by January 2020 and a newer chemical named R410A, or Puron was to be used in its place going forward. So what does this mean for your home HVAC system? Fritts Heating & Air is here to help with all your questions and any changes that may be needed for your HVAC system going forward.

Air Condition Freon: What You Need To Know

If you have an air conditioning system made after 2010

The good news is that most HVAC systems built after 2010 were outfitted to support the Puron refrigerant and need no further changes to run according to the EPA’s new guidelines. Your system can be maintained seasonally as usual.

If you have an air conditioning system made prior to 2010

Here where it gets tricky. AC units made prior to 2010 run off of freon. And as of January 2020, freon will not be available for HVAC technicians to service older units. They can, however, use recycled freon in the meantime to keep your system maintenance up, but eventually, you will have to invest in a current model that runs off of Puron.

Replacing your HVAC for Puron

HVAC units usually have a lifespan of 15 years, so chances are, if your unit is older than 2010, it may be time for an upgrade regardless. Not only will a new system be compatible with the R410A Puron but it will also help save on your energy costs. A new HVAC system is designed to run more efficiently, economically, and with the environment in mind.

At Fritts, we take the time to evaluate and conduct the best plan of action for your specific needs. We have the trained and trusted technicians to help keep your HVAC in accordance with the federal laws and most importantly, properly heating and cooling your home.
