Useful Tips To Help Keep Your Home Warm This Winter

With the cold, winter months setting in and the holiday season upon us, it is important that our homes are comfortable and warm for our families and friends. The furnace and heating system in your home provides warmth during the winter months but there are many ways to help add some backup to your furnace and help keep utility costs low, your heating system from over-exerting, and maintain the most comfortable temperatures from the outside cold.

Try these tips to help keep your home warm during the winter months

#1 Install A Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats make it possible for a programmable schedule, smart learning of your home’s heat needs, and optimal efficiency for your heating system. Smart thermostats will help manage your home’s heat and air and will save you money during the hottest and coldest season.

#2 Set Your Ceiling Fans

If you have ceiling fans in your home, they have a built-in setting for which way the blades are turning. During the summer, the blades spin counter-clockwise to push up warm air and trap it above the fan. But during the winter, the blades need to be changed to spin clockwise which will allow the warm air to be circulated back into the room.

#3 Use Rugs

Hardwood floors, stone floors, and tile floors are all terrible insulators of heat and allow warmth to escape easily. Adding area rugs to your living spaces will help keep heat above your floor and will be very comforting on bare feet.

#4 Utilize Your Curtains & Blinds

During the day when the sun’s rays are beaming in, you should keep your curtains and blinds open. This will allow warm air to come in and be trapped inside your home. Adversely, when the sun goes down, pull your curtains and blinds shut to keep in that warm air and block out the frigid night air.

#5 Don’t Block Air Vents

Air vents are placed all-around your home. Sometimes furniture, rugs, and other items can be positioned in a way to block the vents and the air they are distributing. Check all rooms for where the air vents are located and make sure they are free from obstruction.

#6 Seal Up Cracks & Gaps

Homes have a lot of openings that can go unnoticed. Window seals, door frames, piping, and insulation. To obtain maximum heat and comfort during the winter inspect the exteriors and interiors of your home and seal up openings and cracks with weather stripping, caulk, and sealant.
